May 21, 2009 — A fun and scary investigative report on computer repair: http://www.kptv.com/video/19513766/index.html March 15, 2009 — It's ironic that the recession was the cause of so much of our server's downtime. We clearly had a tough time, just as so many people have. I say that it's ironic, because it's the same recession that's now bringing about a boom in business. For so long, the American way to fix something was to throw it out and buy another, usually on credit. Now, people are getting their older cars fixed instead of buying new, and they're breathing new life into older computers. More importantly, they're shopping around for the best prices, and a lot of my competitors have had computer repair fees that only reinforced the philosophy of "throwing it out and buying another one." Now, with people hunting for ways to spend nothing or close to nothing to fix their problems, and with the competitors' leases and bills not dropping in price proportionally, we've had a flood of computer repair jobs. Our books are looking good, and our customers are happy. We're Ron Paul supporters, and we listen to Peter Schiff's advice. We saw this coming, and we took a few steps to safeguard our business against the initial dips in the economy. Instead of looking for ways to tap into billions of dollars of emergency loans, which only reinforces bad business practices and ultimately ruins businesses, we're tightening our belts and working longer hours, trying to find every way we can to cut our costs and cut your costs at the same time. We only prosper if you prosper. Some of our clients are finding themselves moving out of foreclosed homes and into homes of family members. Families are getting together and making concessions and sacrifices so that they can all live in a slightly cramped house in order that they don't all live on the street or in a shelter. More and more businesses are moving out of their offices and working from home, saving themselves money, but more importantly saving their businesses. Some of our clients are coming to us with three and four computers that have been sitting in the closet or the garage, waiting to be thrown in the garbage. Now they are asking us if these computers can be made useful again. (This, by the way, is one of the greatest boosts for Linux. Windows is so horribly bloated and expensive, while Linux is free and continues to be refined into a better and better operating system.) Sometimes a client will ask to trade in some desktop PC's for laptops, because so many people are living and working in one house, and they need the space and electricity savings. The people of the United States have for so long been sending US dollars to China and Taiwan, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, and other manufacturing countries in exchange for computers and computer parts. Now that our dollars are being hyperinflated into worthlessness, they're going to be less and less eager to accept our dollars, and US companies will have to start manufacturing more. By taking your older foreign-made car to a local garage and putting a thousand dollars into renewing it, it's just like a thousand dollars worth of your car was Made in the USA. By taking your older computer and renewing it at a local shop, it's like you're having it Remade in the USA. I was hesitant to make this a news entry, but because it's directly related to the recent extended downtime of the website, and because it has to do with current events, I felt that it was necessary to put it right on the front page for anyone wondering what's happening to Vander Jagt Computers WinchesterPC.Com nowadays. The short answer is that we're running strong. Because repair businesses tend to succeed during recessions, and because this repair business only prospers if you prosper, we'll be strong during this economic crisis. July 22, 2008 — We recently dropped the price of local pick-up and drop-off service from $25 down to FREE. This is big news, because it means that you don't have to unhook your computer, figure out which things to bring in, try to find our office, or burn gas. Just call us, we'll come pick up your computer for free, then give you a free diagnosis, and talk to you about your options before doing any work. We decided it would be best to put an ad on Real Classic Rock 104.9 / 105.5 FM to let everyone know. To listen to the ad, click here.
